Bought a Car Online or at Auction? How to Plan the Pickup in Florida

Hand holding car keys and paperwork at a sunny Florida car auction lot

Buying a car at an auction, from an online seller, or from someone across the state is easier than ever. Getting it home is the part people forget to plan. A car that doesn't run, a lot that closes early, or a missing paper can turn a simple pickup into a wasted trip. Here's how to make it smooth, whether the car is across town or across Florida.

Before you book the tow: get the paperwork straight

Most auction lots and many dealers won't release a car without the right paperwork. Before you schedule a pickup, have:

  • The release, gate pass or pickup authorization from the seller or auction. Ask the seller exactly what the driver needs to show.
  • The lot number, stock number or buyer number for the car.
  • The VIN (vehicle identification number).
  • Proof the car is paid for, if the seller asks for it.
  • The name and phone number of a contact at the pickup location.

Send these to the tow company ahead of time so the driver has them in hand.

Know the pickup rules

Every lot works differently. Ask the seller:

  • What are the pickup hours, and are there days they're closed?
  • Is there a deadline before storage fees start? Many lots charge storage after a set number of days, so plan the pickup early.
  • Does the driver need an appointment?
  • Is the car inside a gated area, a building or a tight row?

Find out the car's condition

This changes how the car is loaded, so ask the seller and tell your tow company:

  • Does it start and drive?
  • Are there keys? Without keys, the steering may be locked.
  • Does it roll? Are all four tires inflated?
  • Is it all-wheel-drive, electric or lowered?
  • Is there any damage, like a wheel that won't turn?

A car that doesn't run, has no keys or has a locked wheel can still be moved, but the driver needs to know ahead of time to bring the right setup and plan the time.

Photos at pickup and delivery

Ask for photos when the car is loaded and again when it's dropped off. It gives you a clear record of the condition at both ends. If you can, take your own photos too, or ask the seller for recent ones before the pickup.

Plan the drop-off

  • Give the full delivery address, including gate codes or a building number.
  • Make sure someone will be there to receive the car, or agree on where it can be left safely.
  • If it's going to a mechanic or body shop, call the shop first so they know it's coming and have space for it.
  • In a neighborhood with an HOA, check where a car can be parked or dropped off.
